Opti Niacin
Product Description
Niacin is a water-soluble vitamin that is part of the B-vitamin family. It is found in nuts, eggs, dairy products, fish and enriched breads. This vitamin has been used for many years to lower cholesterol. It is considered a first choice because it is safe and has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack. Niacin lowers total and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and it raises the good cholesterol (HDL) as well. Niacin can lower LDL cholesterol levels as much as 30 percent.
To produce such lipid lowering, niacin up to 1,500 mg/day may be necessary. Since niacin can cause severe redness and itching of the skin (called a “flush”), therapy is usually begun with small doses and gradually increased. Flushing and itching are lessened if it is taken with a full stomach. Opti-Niacin is a sustained release formulation. You may or may not experience the niacin flush with this product.
A niacin flush can be scary if you don’t understand what is happening. It is not a side effect or bad reaction; it is not serious and always passes. In fact, if the 20-30 minutes of discomfort can be tolerated, the flush is actually beneficial to your system. Niacin causes a rapid dilating of all blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the skin (redness and itching), releasing heat from the body. You may experience mild chills as the flush subsides; this is rewarming your core temperature. The longer you take the niacin, the milder the flushing becomes.
