The human body manufactures SAM-e from methionine, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods. Clinical trials with SAM-e, while mostly of open or uncontrolled, have been conducted for over 25 years. SAM-e is available by prescription in Europe, where it is known by the proprietary names like GumbaralŪ and SamyrŪ. Uses for SAM-e include the alternative treatment of depression and osteoarthritis.
